Team Members

JOHN C.L. DARBY

President & CEO

John Darby was born in Charleston, SC. With family roots tracing back for generations, John understands the area, its people, and Charleston tradition. Community involvement is a big part of that tradition. In addition to actively serving on The Beach Company’s Board of Director’s, John’s community involvement includes The Citadel Real Estate Foundation, Trident CEO Council, Palmetto Business Forum and East Cooper Land Trust Advisory Council, to name a few.

Upon graduating from The Citadel in 1985, John Darby started his career in banking with First Union Mortgage Corporation in Residential and Commercial Financing where he worked in Greensboro and Winston-Salem, NC, Orlando, FL and Columbia, SC. In 1990, John returned to Charleston to lead the family business, and became president in 1999.

Today, The Beach Company has grown to one of South Carolina’s largest privately-owned businesses, ranking #38 in the Top 100 privately-owned business firms in the state.

DANIEL J. DOYLE

COO & Director of Development

Dan Doyle joined The Beach Company in 2004, with the role of expanding the company’s multi-family residential real estate portfolio throughout the southeast. Today, as Chief Operating Officer and Director of Development, Dan is responsible for all development, marketing, asset and property management functions of The Beach Company. He has more than 25 years of real estate industry experience, with the majority spent in the multi-family development and management sectors.

Dan’s undergraduate and graduate degrees are from The University of Michigan. His community involvement includes serving on the Board of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, its Executive Committee and Chair of its Developer’s Council. Dan is also an active member of The Cathedral of St. John The Baptist parish and serves on its Finance Council. Under Dan’s leadership, the company’s development department has expanded to more than 20 areas in the Southeast to include dynamic emerging cities such as Greenville, SC, Nashville, TN, Richmond, VA, and Huntsville, AL.

Louie Soffner

Investor Relations Manager

Louie Soffner rejoined The Beach Company in 2018. His career began with The Beach Company in 2015 where he worked in the property management department as a leasing manager and assistant property manager for multiple properties.  

Before rejoining The Beach Company as Investor Relations Manager in 2018, Louie worked for Greystar in Charleston, SC, as an Investment Accountant for four of their largest close-ended discretionary value-add funds.  

As the Investor Relations Manager, Louie currently coordinates investor communication, capital raising, portfolio management, market research, and investment accounting. Louie is a graduate of Indiana University.

TYLER COOPER

VP, Finance & CFO

Tyler Cooper joined The Beach Company in 2017, bringing a successful 15-year track record of finance experience with him. Tyler graduated from the College of Charleston and began his career as a Development Associate at Indigo Development before receiving a Master of Science in Real Estate Development from Columbia University. After earning his master’s degree, Tyler worked with Flank Development in New York City and with Cassidy Turley in Washington D.C. as a Senior Finance Associate.

Tyler joined The Beach Company after five years as Chief Financial Officer of Johnson Development Associates, a multifamily, industrial and storage development company operating in markets across the United States.

As The Beach Company’s Vice President of Finance, he is responsible for underwriting, financial analysis and assisting in asset management, procuring debt and equity for new projects, and oversight of risk management, accounting and administration, tax planning, and compliance.

Darby Parker

Acquisitions Manager

Darby Parker joined The Beach Company in 2016, bringing more than 10 years of industry experience.  Prior to joining The Beach Company, Darby held Multifamily Debt and Finance positions with CBRE and Newmark in Washington, DC.

As the Acquisitions Manager, Darby’s responsibilities include sourcing investment opportunities, aligning financing and capital, and defining asset operation and capital programs. Darby is a graduate of the University of Virginia.

ANDREW DENNIS

VP, General Counsel

Andrew Dennis joined The Beach Company in 2017 with over 10 years of experience in the legal services industry. Andrew graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina.

He previously represented The Beach Company for nine years while working with Nexsen Pruet in Charleston. During that time, he was able to develop relationships and friendships with many of the staff. Today, Andrew oversees outside legal services and is the General Counsel for The Beach Company and its various affiliates and related companies.

Andrew was a recipient of The Charleston Regional Business Journal’s “Forty Under 40″ award in 2015 and is a graduate of both Leadership Charleston and Leadership Berkeley.

WARD McCARTHY

Director of Portfolio Management

Ward McCarthy joined The Beach Company in 2022, bringing more than 12 years of industry experience. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in Real Estate, Ward began his career at Berkshire Residential Investments. During his nine-year tenure at Berkshire, Ward was instrumental in helping the company expand their fund management business while overseeing the asset management functions for various funds and separate accounts. During this time, Ward obtained a graduate degree from the University of Georgia. In 2019, Ward joined AXA Investment Managers – Real Assets as a Fund Manager responsible for expanding the company’s US real estate footprint.

As the Asset Management Manager, Ward carries out the execution of investment strategies for all Fund acquisitions, manages the development and execution of renovation plans, and oversees all 3rd party management companies.

JUSTIN CIFERNO

Acquisitions Associate

Justin Ciferno joined The Beach Company in 2023, bringing more than 5 years of industry experience. Prior to joining The Beach Company, Justin worked in acquisitions, development, and capital markets capacities for Lifestyle Communities in Columbus, OH, and Blaze Capital Partners in Charleston, SC.

As the Acquisitions Associate, Justin’s responsibilities include identifying, underwriting, and conducting economic and market analysis of investment opportunities. Justin is a graduate of The Ohio State University.

CLARE KAYE

VP, Financial Manager

Clare Kaye is a financial professional with broad experience in all aspects of accounting, auditing and financial management.

Clare attended Rider University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance. Clare began her career with The Beach Company in 1992 as a Property Accountant. After working as an Assurance Manager with KPGM Peat Marwick, LLP from 1993-1999, Clare returned to The Beach Company as VP of Finance Operations. In 2006, she began her own company, Keystone Business Advisory Services, LLC, where she worked for more than 12 years. In 2019, Clare returned, again to The Beach Company as a VP and Financial Manager.

Clare is responsible for overseeing the accounting for The Beach Investment Fund, investor distributions and reporting, quarterly reporting to the board and annual reporting to the stockholders.

WENDY W. KINSELLA

VP, Human Resources

Wendy Kinsella joined The Beach Company in 2002, after serving as Human Resources Manager in the telecom industry for the Fortune 500 Andrew Corporation in Atlanta where she managed overall HR Operations for Georgia, California and Texas locations. She graduated from the University of Georgia and maintains PHR advanced professional credentials.

Wendy directs recruiting/staffing, employee relations, benefits administration, and health and safety compliance for The Beach Company and all of its subsidiaries. A member of the National Society of Human Resources Management and the Tri-County Human Resources Association, she also serves on the Board of Directors for the Charleston County March of Dimes.

Karen Bacot

VP, Marketing

Karen Bacot joined The Beach Company in 2013, bringing with her more than 25 years of experience directing global marketing operations for three luxury resort developments. As the Marketing Director, she oversees The Beach Company’s branding, public relations, digital and print communications, social media, partnerships and community relations.

After moving from her home town of Huntsville, AL, to Charleston, SC, in 1992 the Auburn University graduate joined Kiawah Development Partners serving as Creative Director and Director of Marketing over an era of 15 years. Bacot was honored with American Advertising Federation Silver Medal Award in 2008, for outstanding contributions to advertising, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern, and has earned over 50 industry awards including eight ADDY “Best of Show,” and numerous AIGA, Ozzie, HOWIE, and PICA winners

Reid Scharling

Asset Management Analyst

Reid Scharling graduated from Wofford College in 2020 with a degree in Finance and Economics. After graduating, Reid began working in private banking before joining Beach Real Estate Funds in 2021.  

In this role, Reid supports the Director of Asset Management by analyzing and reporting on the financial performance of each asset while tracking current and future capital projects, evaluating the implementation of value-creation strategies for each investment, and analyzing investment costs.
